22 Aug Davao: The Next Tech Hub
With its thriving business-friendly environment, peace and order, Davao is one of the cities being eyed by major players off the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector as a possible ‘Silicon Valley’ of the Philippines.
Silicon Valley is the name given to a place in San Francisco Bay area where famous IT startups such as Google, Facebook and Apple are located.
Ryan Guadalquiver, managing director of Hewlett-Packard Philippines, in his plenary session on Livelihood Exchange (LIVEX) Philippines 2015 said that Davao is a suitable place for the IT sect to thrive. It has a more controlled environment which makes it ideal for startups.
Guadalquiver joined as a panelist in the ‘Innovation and Entrepreneurship Toward Building a Business Startups Ecosystem in Mindanao and the BIMP-EAGA Development Corridors’. Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines-East Asean Growth Area is a collaborative venture aiming to promote itself as single market in the Association of Southeast Asian National Economic Cooperation.
Given the right ecosystem, emerging IT startups can thrive and become successful. Technology will have a ready market in the EAGA market.
But there can only be one Silicon Valley and that is in the United States. It has become the IT mecca where 60% of its current population are foreigners.
Though Davao is still a far cry from Silicon Valley, it has captured the attention of the IT sect. Now, the city needs only to work out a niche and a community that will support the growth of the IT sect.
